If a truss roof is used with this method the gable truss is manufactured 3 shorter than the others.
In this detail an outlooker type overhang is shown where the rake beam is constructed 3 in.

If the gable end ov erhang uses the ladder detail method of construction and the length of the ov erhang is greater than 8 inches to 12 inches you may be able to strengthen the connection of the ov erhang by installing from the attic inch diameter lag screws that are long enough to go through the gable truss or rafter through the wall sheathing and 1 1 2 inches into the inside framing member of the ladder framing.

For outlookers the supports are the gable truss or rafters and the first truss or set of rafters back from the gable truss or rafters.

The main component of any eaves detail is the rafter tail the part of the rafter that extends beyond the exterior wall.
And the line length measurement from the roof peak to the building wall is the hypotenuse.

The rise or height of the roof at its peak is the altitude of the triangle.
Failure of these connections can lead to the loss of a whole section of the roof at the gable end.
Then a 2 4 outlooker is placed over the dropped gable and butted into the side of the adjacent full height truss.
